Auston Matthews parents-American ice hockey center, Auston Matthews was born on September 17th, 1997 in San Ramon, California in the United States of America.

When he was two months old, his family relocated to Scottsdale, Arizona, and when he was two, he started going to Phoenix Coyotes games. He enjoyed watching Shane Doan and Daniel Brière the most.

The Zamboni equipment that was used to wipe the ice between intermissions initially piqued Matthews’ curiosity despite his lack of initial enthusiasm for the sport. Soon after turning five, he first expressed an interest in hockey and started participating in the Arizona Bobcats minor hockey program.

Alexander Ovechkin scored a goal while lying on his back after being tripped by the Coyotes’ defense on January 16, 2006, making it famously known as “The Goal.” Matthews, who was eight years old at the time, was at the game between the Coyotes and Washington Capitals.

Matthews described the shot as “possibly one of the best goals ever” in an interview from 2016. Matthews participated in baseball and hockey as a kid. Baseball was Auston’s favorite sport, and thanks to his superb hand-eye coordination, he was a great hitter.

Matthews, however, decided against a baseball career because he didn’t like how slowly the game moved. His parents knew very little about hockey when he first began playing it.

Boris Dorozhenko, who had previously developed Mexico’s national ice hockey program, served as his primary coach during his formative years. Dorozhenko resided with Matthews and his parents throughout the first several years of his stay in the country.

With the Kharkov minor ice hockey club, Matthews participated in the 2010 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament.

When Matthews was a baby, his family relocated to Scottsdale, Arizona. He played baseball and hockey throughout his childhood, but after seeing the Phoenix Coyotes play, he became especially interested in the sport.

Prior to being selected in the NHL draft in 2016, Matthews played for the ZSC Lions of the Swiss National League. That same year, he won the Swiss Cup. Matthews is a product of the USA Hockey National Team Development Program in the United States Hockey League (USHL).

The Toronto Maple Leafs chose Matthews first overall in the draft, who was largely regarded as the best prospect.

Matthews became the first player to score four goals in his NHL debut in the modern era. As the fourth teenager in league history to achieve the feat, he set the Maple Leafs rookie record with 40 goals in 2016–17, becoming only the second rookie with Alexander Ovechkin to do it since the 2004–05 lockout.

As the top rookie in the NHL for the season, his efforts earned him the Calder Memorial Trophy. With 41 goals in 52 games, Matthews took home the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy in 2020–21 as the league’s top scorer.

Matthews hit the 60-goal plateau for the first time in 2021–22, broke records for the most goals scored by an American-born player and a Maple Leaf in a single season, and earned the Rocket Richard Trophy for the second consecutive year.

Additionally, he received the Hart Trophy for Most Valuable Player and the Ted Lindsay Award for being the best player, as chosen by his peers.

As a representative of the United States abroad, Matthews has competed in the U17 World Hockey Challenge, two U18 World Championships, two U20 World Championships, and one IIHF World Championship.

Matthews was born to Brian Matthews who hails from California and Ema Matthews who also comes from Hermosillo in Mexico. He shares the same parents with his two sisters; Alexandria, who is three years older, and Breyana, who is five years younger. 

Wes Matthews, Matthews’ uncle who briefly played in the National Football League for the Miami Dolphins, and his father, who played college baseball, are all athletes. His father works as the chief technology officer for a New Jersey-based manufacturer.
