Baroness Hallett Children: Meet Her 2 Children: Baroness Hallett was born on Friday, December 16, 1949, in New Forest National Park, United Kingdom.

Officially known as Heather Carol Hallett, Baroness Hallett, she’s a retired English judge of the Court of Appeal and a crossbench life peer.

Hallett was called to the BAR by the Inner Temple in 1972, specializing in criminal law, and in 1989, she was appointed as a Recorder of the Crown Court.

In 1995, she worked as a deputy High Court judge before becoming a full-time judge of the High Court in 1999 in the Queen’s Bench Division.

Having been vice-chair of the Bar Council in 1997, she became the first woman to chair the Bar Council, in 1998, and in 2005, she was promoted to the Court of Appeal.

Subsequently (in January 2006), Hallett was appointed a member of the Judicial Appointments Commission as a representative of the judiciary.

She was the fifth woman to sit in the Court of Appeal and led the independent inquest into the 7/7 bombings.

In 2011, she became Treasurer of the Inner Temple and in February 2013, she was assessed as the 8th most powerful woman in Britain by Woman’s Hour on BBC Radio 4.

In November 2013, she was appointed Vice-President of the Criminal Division of the Court of Appeal and since 2019, she’s been a Member of the House of Lords of the United Kingdom.

In December 2021, Hallett was announced as the chair of the public inquiry into the UK government’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In March 2022, the Inquiry Chair wrote to then Prime Minister, Boris Johnson with her recommendations for the draft Terms of Reference, following consultations with bereaved families, sector representatives, and the public.

Hallett has recommended that the draft Terms of Reference are reframed to put inequalities at the forefront. She’s also asked for the Terms of Reference to be expanded to include children and young people, impacts on mental health and wellbeing, and collaboration between the central government, Devolved Administrations, regional and local authorities, and the voluntary and community sector.

She has also proposed changes to sharpen the focus of the Terms of Reference with regards to support for victims of domestic abuse, first contact with the NHS, including 111 and 999 services, care in the home, and regulatory control.

In July 2022, the Terms of Reference for the public inquiry were agreed upon by Boris Johnson and eventually, the Public Inquiry was launched.
