Ross became interested in painting during his 20-year Air Force tenure after taking an art class at the U.S.O. club in Anchorage. Many of his painting professors, who were more interested in abstract painting, regularly came into conflict with him.

Ross came across the television program The Magic of Oil Painting, hosted by German painter Bill Alexander, while working as a part-time bartender.: 17-18 Alexander used a 16th-century painting technique known as alla prima, or “wet-on-wet,” which allowed him to complete a painting in thirty minutes.

Following his study and mastery of the technique, Ross started painting Alaskan landscapes on novelty gold-mining pans, which he subsequently successfully sold.

Ross’s sales revenue eventually outpaced his military pay. As a master sergeant, he left the Air Force in 1981.

He traveled as a salesman and instructor for Alexander’s “Alexander Magic Art Supplies Company” after returning to Florida, where he studied painting under Alexander. Ross was persuaded he could succeed on his own by Annette Kowalski, who had attended one of his sessions in Clearwater, Florida.

Ross was known for having permed hair, which he eventually loathed but kept after incorporating it into the business logo. When his art class was broadcast as a pilot in 1982 by a station in Falls Church, Virginia, 60 PBS stations expressed interest in carrying the program.

He was brought to Muncie, Indiana in 1983 by PBS station WIPB with the promise of creative freedom, and he quickly made friends with the employees.

In 1989, he returned to his Florida home, but he continued to visit Muncie every three months to record the show. Ross claimed he produced the event for no charge and made money selling instructional books, videos, and painting supplies.

Reruns of the program, which ran from January 11, 1983, to May 17, 1994, are still broadcast in various broadcast markets and nations, including the non-profit digital subchannel network Create and the streaming platform Hulu.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the BBC in the United Kingdom aired repeats of programs while the majority of people were confined to their homes.

Ross would demonstrate the rapid wet-on-wet oil painting technique to viewers throughout each half-hour episode, painting a scene directly from his mind in real-time rather than first sketching it out.

He described his restricted paint selection and broke the procedure down into easy-to-follow phases. Ross and Fred Rogers, the host of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, were contrasted by artist and art critic Mira Schor due to Ross’s slow speaking and gentle voice.

With assistance from Annette and Walt Kowalski, Ross built what would become a $15 million company called Bob Ross Inc., which would later broaden to include classes instructed by other artists educated in his techniques. Ross utilized his television program to advertise a range of painting materials and class records.
