Charles Hanson career

Hanson began working as a valuer in the European Ceramics and Glass Department at Christie’s in 1999 after earning his MRICS qualification.

He then worked for antique houses in Staffordshire and Cheshire until establishing Hansons Auctioneers and Valuers in August 2005 in Etwall, Derbyshire.

Historica, a section dedicated to coins and antiques, was established by his organization in 2016. A Qianlong-era Chinese porcelain vase that was used as a doorstop by the seller for 36 years was the most expensive piece that Hanson has ever sold, for £650,000.

The medals of Rowland Hill, 1st Viscount Hill, a commander at the Battle of Waterloo, and a brooch that had belonged to Katherine Neville, Baroness Hastings, are among the other noteworthy sales.

Hanson has also participated in charity auctions for Careline and the Herd of Sheffield, among other organizations.

Hanson has been a regular on the BBC television show Bargain Hunt since 2002. There, he serves as an advisor to one of two teams of competitors who buy and sell antiques in an effort to turn a profit.

He participated as an expert in a celebrity Bargain Hunt in November 2018, when teams comprised of Casualty cast members attempted to collect funds for Children in Need.

Together with Charlie Ross, James Braxton, Philip Serrell, and other BBC antiques specialists, Hanson recorded a rock rendition of the beloved song “Sleigh Ride” in 2017 to benefit BBC Children in Need.

Grahame and Jack Corbyn, a father-son combination, produced it. Independent record company Saga Entertainment distributed it digitally. At the top of the Amazon Rock Charts, the single reached its pinnacle.

After police were called to a “domestic incident” at Hanson’s Quarndon home in June 2023, the man was charged with seven counts in December 2023, including assault and using coercive behavior.
