Prior to being promoted to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, Burnes played for the Arizona League Brewers in his professional debut. Burnes pitched 35+2⁄3 innings in a 3–0 victory with a 2.02 ERA in a game between Arizona and Wisconsin.

He was promoted to the Biloxi Shuckers after making ten starts and having a 1.05 ERA in 2017 after beginning the season with the Carolina Mudcats.

Together, the two teams’ record for Burnes at the end of 2017 was 8-3 with a 1.67 ERA. After the season, he was recognized as the Brewers’ minor league pitcher of the year.

In order to avoid salary arbitration, Burnes inked a $6.5 million contract with the Brewers on March 22, 2022. Burnes was selected by the Brewers to start the Opening Day rotation. He received a spot in the MLB All-Star Game for 2022.

Burnes had a record of 12-8 in 2022 after pitching 202 innings with a 2.94 ERA and a league-high 243 strikeouts. He had a.961 fielding percentage when playing defense.
