Freeze graduated from Senatobia High School in 1988 and went on to Northwest Mississippi Community College, where he lettered in junior college baseball for two years. In the spring of 1990, he was named an NJCAA Academic All-American for the Rangers.

Freeze went on to play baseball at the University of Southern Mississippi, where he tried out for the team in the fall of 1990, hoping to make the roster for the spring of 1991. He was dismissed from the team.

He earned a Bachelor of Science in mathematics and a minor in coaching and sports administration from Southern Miss in 1992.
