James Brown (May 3, 1933 – December 25, 2006) was a vocalist and musician from the United States. He is known as “the Hardest-Working Man in Show Business,” “Godfather of Soul,” “Mr. Dynamite,” and “Soul Brother No. 1” in addition to being the fundamental founder of funk music and a major character of twentieth-century music.

During his more than 50-year career, he influenced the creation of various music genres. Brown was one of the original ten honorees into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on January 23, 1986, in New York.

Who is James Brown Married to?

James Brown has three marriages. In 1953, he married Velma Warren, and they had one son together. The couple split more than a decade later, and the official divorce judgment was granted in 1969. They had a deep bond that lasted till Brown died. On October 22, 1970, Brown married Deidre “Deedee” Jenkins for the second time.

They shared two daughters. After what his daughter described as years of domestic abuse, they were separated by 1974, and the final divorce order was obtained on January 10, 1981. In 1984, he married Adrienne Lois Rodriguez (March 9, 1950 – January 6, 1996) for the third time.

Following Brown’s death, the circumstances of the marriage sparked controversy, with Brown’s attorney, Albert “Buddy” Dallas, alleging that the marriage was invalid; Hynie was still married to Javed Ahmed, a man from Bangladesh. Hynie said Ahmed married her to obtain a Green Card and that the marriage was annulled, however, the annulment did not take place until April 2004.

Brown, 69, and Hynie, 33, tied the knot on December 23, 2002, in a ceremony officiated by Rev. Larry Flyer. Following Brown’s death, the marriage’s circumstances created controversy, with Brown’s attorney, Albert “Buddy” Dallas, claiming that the marriage was unlawful; Hynie was still married to Javed Ahmed, a Bangladeshi man.

According to Hynie, Ahmed married her to obtain permanent residency through a Green Card, and the marriage was dissolved; however, the annulment did not occur until April 2004. She provided a marriage certificate as proof of her marriage to Brown during a CNN interview with Larry King, but she did not provide King with court documentation indicating an annulment.

How many children did James Brown own?

Brown had nine children, five sons (Teddy (1954-1973), Terry, Larry, Micheal Brown, and James Joseph Brown Jr.) and six daughters (LaRhonda Petitt, Dr. Yamma Noyola Brown Lumar, Deanna Brown Thomas, Cinnamon Brown, Jeanette Bellinger, and Venisha Brown (1964-2018). Brown was also the grandfather of eight grandkids and four great-grandchildren. Teddy Brown, Brown’s eldest son, died in an automobile accident on June 14, 1973.

According to DNA tests, Brown fathered at least three extramarital children, according to an article published in the British daily The Daily Telegraph on August 22, 2007. LaRhonda Pettit (born 1962), a retired flight attendant and teacher from Houston, is the first to be identified.

Michael Deon Brown, another purported son, was born to Mary Florence Brown in September 1968, and although pleading no contest to a paternity suit launched against him in 1983, Brown never formally acknowledged Michael as his son.

During the will fight, Debra Opri, another Brown family attorney, stated to Larry King that Brown wanted a DNA test performed after his death to determine the paternity of James Brown Jr. (born 2001)—not for Brown’s sake, but for the sake of the other family members. In April 2007, Hynie chose a guardian ad litem whom she wanted the court to appoint to represent her son, James Brown Jr., in the paternity procedures. James Brown Jr. has been identified as his biological son.
