Leeds and Phillips started contract negotiations for a new deal in July 2019. On August 8, 2019, it was made public that Leeds had turned down offers for Phillips during the 2019 transfer window in an effort to keep him with the team. The offers that were turned down for Phillips totaled about £27 million.

He renewed his five-year contract with Leeds in September 2019. Phillips scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Birmingham City during Leeds United’s centenary week, which was played in front of yet another sizable crowd at Elland Road.
