Grammer was born in Saint Thomas, United States of America Virginia Island to Frank Allen Grammer and Sally Cranmer. He had a younger sister, Karen, and four half-siblings from his father’s second marriage.

Numerous familial tragedies had molded Grammer’s personal life. Grammer was reared by his mother and his maternal grandparents, Gordon and Evangeline Cranmer, in New Jersey after his parents’ divorced.

Later, when Grammer was twelve years old, the family relocated to Pompano Beach, Florida, and shortly after that, his grandfather passed away from cancer.

An insane taxi driver killed his father in St. Thomas in 1968. His sister was abducted, raped, and killed in Colorado Springs in 1975. His two teenage half-brothers perished in a scuba diving mishap in 1980.

In Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Grammer attended the exclusive preparatory school Pine Crest School. He first started singing and acting on stage there.

Later, Grammer received a scholarship at the Juilliard School to study acting, where he was a part of Group 6 from 1973 to 1975. However, following the death of his sister, Grammer stopped going to school and was ultimately dismissed.

According to an interview Grammer gave to the Cayman Compass in 2019, he identified as “a Caribbean kid” who “was born in St. Thomas, USVI, and I have been back and forth a lot, gone to the Bahamas a lot, St. John and the Virgin Islands and the BVI.”

Grammer made his professional acting debut as Lennox in the 1981 Broadway version of Macbeth after receiving acting training at Juilliard and the Old Globe Theatre.
