Mason was born to Hugh Angus Warner and Barbara Warner Wyer. He shares the same parents with the Scottish musician and actress, Shirley Ann Manson.

He has stated that his mother’s side of the family, which was from the Appalachian Mountains in West Virginia, had Sioux ancestry in addition to being of English, German, Irish, and Polish blood.

Although his father was a Roman Catholic, he grew up going to his mother’s Episcopal church. First through tenth grades were spent at Heritage Christian School for him.

Manson fell in love with music that he “wasn’t supposed to” since his teachers in that school sought to teach the students what music they weren’t supposed to listen to.

Manson then changed schools and earned his high school diploma in 1987 at GlenOak. He started attending Broward Community College in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in 1990 after moving there with his parents.

He was pursuing a degree in journalism and building his portfolio by contributing to the music publication 25th Parallel.

Additionally, he conducted interviews with musicians and quickly got to know a number of the artists whose work his own was later compared to, including Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails and Groovie Mann from My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult, who later served as his mentor and produced his debut album.

Manson first gained notoriety as the lead vocalist of the band bearing his name, of which he has been the lone constant since its founding in 1989.

His stage name, like that of the other founding members of the band, was created by fusing the names of two conflicting American cultural icons: the actress Marilyn Monroe and the cult leader Charles Manson. He is well known for his contentious stage presence and public demeanor.

Manson is best known for the albums he released in the 1990s, such as Portrait of an American Family (1994), Antichrist Superstar (1996), and Mechanical Animals (1998). They were married in a private, non-denominational ceremony held by Chilean filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky on March 22, 2004, after he proposed. Due to “irreconcilable differences,” Von Teese filed for divorce on December 30, 2006.

In 2007, details of Manson’s relationship with singer, actor, and model Evan Rachel Wood became public. For several years, they apparently had an on-again, off-again relationship. He got down on one knee and asked Wood to marry him at a stage performance in Paris in January 2010, but they later called off their engagement.
