Margaret Theresa Bradley was born to Ophelia Birdie and Douglas Bradley at Cook County Hospital on 14 June 1931. She is the middle child of three sisters. Marla went to Wendell Phillips Academy High School, which was located in the Bronze Ville Neighbourhood on Chicago South Side.
