Born on December 9, 2004, he made his debut in the KHL in 2021 and quickly established himself as a promising young player. Recently, in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft, Michkov was selected as the seventh overall pick by the Philadelphia Flyers.

From an early age, Michkov’s hockey talent began to attract attention. He set scoring records for his age group, including an impressive 109 points in 26 games in the Russian U-16 league. As a 16-year-old in the U-20 division, he surpassed the previous points record held by Nikita Kucherov by scoring 56 points in 56 games.

Matvei Michkov made the transition from Lokomotiv Yaroslavl’s youth program to SKA Saint Petersburg in 2020. During the 2020-21 season, he played for both SKA-1946 and SKA Varyagi in the Youth Hockey League (MHL), recording an impressive 56 points in 56 games. He led the league in goals with 38 and finished eighth overall in total points. In 2021, Michkov made his professional debut in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) with SKA Saint Petersburg, marking his first game on September 2. Throughout the season, he split his playing time between SKA and their junior affiliates, contributing 5 points in 13 KHL games and an additional 51 points in 28 games with SKA-1946 and SKA Varyagi in the MHL. Michkov faced a setback when he suffered an injury from Alexei Emelin, which forced him to miss two months of KHL action. Michkov showcased his exceptional skills during the 2021 World U18 Championships, particularly in a game against Germany where he scored a hat trick for the Russian national team. At just 16 years old, he was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. He also received recognition as the Best Forward and earned a spot on the media all-star team.
