Four times on Gunsmoke, Richards gave performances. He plays a nearsighted gunfighter who outdraws and nearly kills Matt Dillon in the 1955 premiere of the series, “Matt Gets It.”

In “Mr. and Mrs. Amber” the next year, he played a poor, helpless homesteader who is harassed by his wealthy, self-righteous brother-in-law. In episodes from 1958 and 1968, he made his other two Gunsmoke appearances.
