He developed a passion for music and arts at a younger age, was consistent throughout his career, and rose through the ranks to become one of the most sought-after American acts

As a musician, he was the singer and guitarist for the San Diego-area bands Pitchfork, Drive Like Jehu, and Hot Snakes, performing with fellow San Diego musician John Reis.

As a visual artist, he created album art, promotional artwork, and merchandise designs for all of his bands as well as for Reis’ band Rocket from the Crypt and Swami Records label.

In 2022, the Trash Lamb Gallery in San Diego’s South Park featured an exhibition of posters Froberg created for the area’s underground music scene titled “Let My People Go: Art and Illustration 1988 to Present.”

He was also known by the pseudonyms Rick Fork and Rick Farr and performed on more than 20 albums. His last completed album, “Jericho Sirens” with Hot Snakes, was released in 2018.

Sadly, the frontman for Drive Like Jehu and Hot Snakes has died. Rick Froberg passed away at 55 on Friday, June 30, 2023, due to an undiagnosed heart condition. His death was confirmed in a post via his official Instagram account.

right now, everything about this loss feels impossible but Rick’s family and i are powerfully backed by the strength of his long-forged and far-reaching community. sure as shit, we’ll bear the unbearable together and advance his art and spirit, not as memory, but as a living force forever shaping lives and futures.

Rick Froberg was a world onto himself with incomparable talent and intellect, but most importantly a fierce force of nature with a heart of gold. he was authenticity incarnate & a deep soul —and he will be missed beyond words. let’s play his music, devour his art, make things in his honor, and continue this fucking amazing man.

A few weeks ago on Instagram, Froberg posted several new photos of himself and told fans “Hot Snakes, by the way, is working on a new record – very near done – so look out.”
