In politics, Byrd served for more than 60 years. In the 1940s, he founded and oversaw a local Ku Klux Klan organization, which he subsequently called “the greatest mistake I ever made.” This was his entrance into politics.

Then, from 1947 to 1950, he served in the West Virginia House of Delegates, and from 1950 to 1952, in the West Virginia State Senate.

Byrd was first chosen to serve in the US House of Representatives in 1952, where he spent six years until winning a Senate seat in 1958.

After succeeding his longtime comrade Ted Kennedy for the position of Senate Majority Whip from 1971 to 1977, he advanced to become one of the Senate’s most prominent senators. He served as secretary of the Senate Democratic Caucus from 1967 to 1971.

Byrd served as both the Senate Minority Leader and Senate Majority Leader for the following twelve years, steering the Democratic caucus. He resigned in 1989 as a result of demands to make space for new party leadership.

Byrd was the longest-serving Democratic senator and served as President pro tempore four times when his party controlled the Senate.

After the vice president and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, he was now third in line for the presidency.

Byrd was able to direct a substantial amount of federal funding toward West Virginia-related projects during his three terms as chairman of the United States Senate Committee on Appropriations.

While Byrd contended that the numerous federal projects he pushed to bring to West Virginia reflected progress for the people of his state, critics ridiculed his efforts as “pork barrel spending.”

Notably, Byrd vehemently opposed Clinton’s efforts in 1993 to permit homosexuals to serve in the military and backed initiatives to restrict same-sex unions.

Prior to the early 2000s, Byrd had entirely repudiated racism and segregation, despite the fact that he had earlier in his career filibustered against the 1964 Civil Rights Act and backed the Vietnam War.

Byrd was vehemently opposed to the Iraq War. Byrd, who was well known for his understanding of Senate precedent and legislative process, later in life produced a four-volume history of the Senate.

Byrd was hospitalized numerous times as his health deteriorated at the end of his life. On June 28, 2010, he passed away while still in office. He was 92 years old. He was laid to rest in Arlington County, Virginia’s Columbia Gardens Cemetery.
