Born in Indragiri, Riau, Sumatra, Indonesia, Wahid migrated to Singapore in 1935 and received his early education at Geylang Malay School.

Before entering the acting industry, Wahid pursued his hobby of painting and exhibited great talent. His exceptional paintings caught the attention of Cathay Keris Studios, which offered him a position as a studio set painter in 1956. Director B.N. Rao, impressed by Wahid’s sense of humor and ability to make others laugh, cast him in the film Pontianak in 1957.

In Pontianak, Wahid portrayed the role of a satay seller, which earned him the stage name “Wahid Satay.” His performance as the comedic satay seller became one of the most memorable scenes in the film.
